Then, I watched basically everything that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/The_Brothers_Chaps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Brothers Chaps<\/a>, Mike and Matt Chapman, put on the site from then on. <em>Homestarrunner.com<\/em> became <a href=\"https:\/\/homestarrunner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as much of a friend<\/a> to me as any of the actual humans who surrounded me during my high school days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, exactly like my high school friends, we went on to do our own thing. <em>Homestar Runner<\/em> gradually became <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Hiatuses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">more and more sporadic<\/a>, as did I. Every once in a while, however, The Brothers Chaps would emerge to release something new for fans. At one point, there was nearly five years of silence before it was broken by <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Fish_Eye_Lens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Fish Eye Lens<\/a><\/em>. We check in on each other, you know? Show we still care. Whenever we reconnect, it&#8217;s just like the old days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-constrained wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p>It&#8217;s always nice seeing my old friend, so I became extra-interested when Mike and Matt reunited Videlectrix to start putting out some really real <a href=\"https:\/\/videlectrix.itch.io\/hide-n-ween\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">money-cost games<\/a> like <em><a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/2442020\/Dangeresque_The_Roomisode_Triungulate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dangeresque: The Roomisode Triungulate<\/a><\/em>. More importantly, it made me realize I could use my tremendous press influence as an excuse to trick them into talking to me. Sure enough, after I snuck through some back channels to contact them, they agreed to an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is really just for me, but maybe it will interest you too. Just note that we discuss a lot of inside references here. I own <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Sundae_Drivin%27\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Night Driver<\/a> <\/em>because of you. Do you play any recent games? Are there games from the last decade that you have really enjoyed?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We will gladly take full responsibility for spreading any 2600 love. We have an assorted pile of consoles in our office\/studio, and the 2600 is the only one that works consistently. We go through phases of which <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/File:TwitterSbemailsongGuitar.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consoles are hooked up<\/a> to our big wood-paneled floor model TV, but the 2600 is always plugged in. We use it like a screensaver and will just put the title screen of <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/15334\/swordquest-earthworld\/screenshots\/atari-2600\/89279\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SwordQuest<\/a><\/em> or <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/4059\/joust\/screenshots\/atari-2600\/50040\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joust<\/a><\/em> or <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/575\/moon-patrol\/screenshots\/atari-2600\/39843\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Moon Patrol<\/a><\/em> on to have in the background.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for recent games, we\u2019ve been playing and really digging <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/23427\/secret-quest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Secret Quest<\/a><\/em>, thanks to the <a href=\"https:\/\/store.steampowered.com\/app\/1919470\/Atari_50_The_Anniversary_Celebration\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Atari 50<\/em> collection<\/a>. We never got a physical cartridge copy, sadly. But we do have like 8 copies each of <em>Asteroids<\/em>, <em>Combat<\/em> and <em>E.T.<\/em>, the extras of which we use to prop up the legs of our work table so it\u2019s tall enough to be a standing desk.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Strong Bad\u2019s Cool Game for Attractive People <\/em>was an unprecedented cultural shift. We <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/strong-bads-cool-game-for-attractive-people-is-getting-delisted-again\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">can\u2019t buy it anymore<\/a>. Is there any possibility that future children will be able to experience it, or is it fated to lie at the bottom of the ocean next to the wreckage of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/update-telltale-games-enters-liquidation-some-games-delisted-from-steam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">good ship Telltale<\/a>?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-constrained wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p>Oh, man! \u201cUnprecedented cultural shift!?!\u201d We kinda always thought <em>SBCG4AP<\/em> was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/destructoid-review-strong-bad-episode-5\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">relative failure<\/a>, so it\u2019s good to hear someone thinks that. I mean, <em>we <\/em>liked how it turned out, but as far as video game success stories go\u2026 are you sure you\u2019re not thinking of \u201c<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/reviews\/review-world-of-goo-switch\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">World of Goo<\/a><\/em>?\u201d Anyways, part of us likes that it\u2019s become one of those titles you kinda had to be there for, but it would prolly also be okay if it got remastered one day.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That being said, it\u2019s really cool when we hear that someone\u2019s first exposure to Homestar Runner was playing <em>SBCG4AP<\/em> on the Wii. So, it clearly reached some folks we otherwise wouldn\u2019t have. What a weird way to discover an obscure web cartoon! Do you think anyone became a <em>G.I. Joe<\/em>&nbsp;fan after playing <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mobygames.com\/game\/9959\/gi-joe-cobra-strike\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cobra Strike<\/a><\/em> for the 2600? Are you still two guys in a small office with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/File:Making_of_100_email.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">strip\u00e8d walls<\/a>?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stripes are gone, but we\u2019ve managed to retain walls. As for our creative process, it\u2019s pretty much the same. We throw ideas around until there\u2019s one that we just keep talking about. Then, we work on it off and on in the background until it gets close. Then, finally, we force ourselves to finish because it\u2019s probably been too long since we made something new.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Actually, do you still use that office in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Office_of_The_Brothers_Chaps\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">basement of a depressing strip mall<\/a>?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s amazing that you know about that. Sadly, that place got un-depressio\u2019d several years ago, and we had to move out. It used to have an adult diaper wholesaler, a hearing aid store, a Piccadilly Cafeteria, and a Big Lots. Now, it\u2019s all LA Fitness, Jo Ann Fabrics, and Starbucks. Who in their right mind could do good creative work in an environment like that?&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you still have real jobs, or are video games the future of the Brothers Chaps?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We are always wandering in and out of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/The_Brothers_Chaps%27_Other_Projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">various film and TV projects<\/a>. We\u2019re definitely enjoying working on and developing video games right now but the downside is that it\u2019s such a time-consuming process that it becomes hard to simultaneously make other Homestar content. And then a year goes by and no one remembers who \u201cStong Band\u201d is anymore. So we\u2019re trying to find a balance.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"640\" height=\"465\" src=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Screen_Homestarrunner01.jpeg?w=640&#038;resize=640%2C465\" alt=\"Homestar Runner &quot;Take these broken wings and learn to fly.&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-449234\" data-recalc-dims=\"1\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"is-layout-constrained wp-block-group\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p><strong>Do you have any aspirations to build Videlectrix into a massive, industry-elipsing brand with its own slice of an office skyscraper? Or, at the very least, a developer with deadlines and a PR budget? Or will it always just be the pair of you and \u201cadditional programming by?\u201d&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We definitely plan to make more games, but given the state of the industry, keepin\u2019 it small is probably a good idea. But I do hope someday we can grow big enough to achieve \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Haver\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">deadline-have<\/a>.\u201d Also, we should probably just learn that \u201cadditional programming\u201d part ourselves one of these days.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Is Videlectrix going to remain focused on saving (and expanding) the substantial back catalog of <em>Homestar <\/em>Flash games, or will we get brand-new games in the future?&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have a buncha ideas for both approaches. It was really fun making and expanding <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.destructoid.com\/dangeresque-the-roomisode-triungulate-has-jumped-to-release\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Dangeresque: The Roomisode Triungulate<\/a><\/em> for Steam\/Itch. And it\u2019d be cool to make <em>Peasant\u2019s Quest 2<\/em> or a console-playable version of <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Stinkoman_20X6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Stinkoman 20X6<\/a><\/em>. But it would be equally cool to make something totally new like <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hrwiki.org\/wiki\/Clapping_Party\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Blistergeist 3D<\/a><\/em> or a <em>Thy Dungeonkid<\/em> platformer.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Do you want to tease us with anything? This is easily the best thing that has happened to me all year. Normally, when I ask someone what they&#8217;re working on, I get a coy response like, &#8220;Wait and see,&#8221; not an early Destructoid-exclusive look at four games that might one day exist. I could pee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While <em>Homestar Runner<\/em> isn&#8217;t the unstoppable force that it once was, I&#8217;m glad it still exists in some form. The old flash games and cartoons are still available, and the Brothers Chaps still add to the pile every once in a while. Plus, they explore their creation in other ways, like with the recent (and excellent) <em><a href=\"https:\/\/trogdorboardgame.homestarrunner.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Trogdor the Board Game<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My hope is that Videlectrix continues its meteoric rise as a creepy basement developer. Throughout the site&#8217;s history, The Brothers Chaps have always expressed their love of old games, and if their output of actual real games is any indication (and I imagine it would be), they&#8217;re quite good at it.
